How Color Discrimination Works
What is Color Acuity?
Color acuity refers to the ability of the human visual system to distinguish between two colors that are perceptually very close. While standard color blindness tests (like the Ishihara plates) check for major chromatic deficiencies, color acuity measures the minimum perceptible difference — the threshold at which your eye can no longer reliably tell two hues apart.
The Delta L Metric Explained
This test uses HSL color space and shifts the target tile's Lightness (L) channel by a precise percentage (ΔL). At Level 1, the odd tile is 20% brighter or darker than the rest — easily distinguishable. The delta follows a smoothed power-curve progression specifically balanced through the higher levels, descending from 20% down to approximately 0.9% at Level 30.

Display & Lighting Conditions
Results vary significantly based on monitor quality, ambient lighting, and screen brightness. For best accuracy: use a calibrated IPS or OLED display, set brightness to 100–120 cd/m², test in a dimly lit room, and avoid glare on the screen surface.
